Windows 3.1 Intermediate Help
A. File Manager Stuff
Most people think the File Manager is the most confusing part
of Windows 3.1. They think Windows Explorer on Windows 95 is easier to use.
But it isn't. File Manager is much easier to use. (Once you know how to use
it). On my last Windows 3.1 page, I will teach how to use the File Manager
and I will teach you Windows 3.1 Tips and Tricks.
B. File Manager: Creating a Directory
If you want to create a directory, click on the folder that says C:
then go to File, Create Dir, and type in the Directory's name.
Copying and Moving Files.
To copy a file just click on it and drag it to where you want it to go.
To move a file, click on it and go to file, click move and then type the
path in which you want the file to go.
Microsoft Windows 3.1 Tips and Tricks.
1. To restore original Program Manager:
Click File, Run and type in SETUP_/p. The _ stands for a space.
2. Start Windows

Windows 3.1 Beginner Help
Now I will discuss about the Error Messages and what they mean and problems you might have with Windows 3.1.
1. Windows won't start.
If windows won't start when you turn on your computer and leaves you
at the MS-DOS prompt, try typing in "win" and hit ENTER. If that doesn't
work check that everything is plugged in. Or type in _______config.sys or
_______autoexec.bat and make sure everything thats in your manuel is in your
computer.
2. Not enough memory.
Windows is running out of memory to operate. Heres what you do.
Try delete some files or programs.
3. No disk in drive A:
Oh yeah this is the "hardest" problem of all. Just put a disk in Drive
A:.
4. Forgot the screen saver password.
All you have to do is press the computer's reset button. If you don't
have a reset button, try Ctrl-Alt-Del or turn off your computer, wait 30
seconds and then turn it back on.
5. Frozen Screen
Press the Esc key twice, or press Ctrl-Alt-Del. A tasklist should pop up
and end the program you are using.
B. Icons
Are you looking for the perfect icon? Well the following command lines
contain icons.
_______progman.exe
_______moricons.dll
Still need more icons? Go to a Windows 95,98,or 2000 computer. Click Start,
Find and type in Shell32.dll. Then when it shows Shell32.dll, right click on
and pick send to 3in Floppy A: then do the same process with explorer.exe.
Shell32.dll and Explorer.exe have the latest icons. They will work perfect
with Windows 3.1. I have those command lines.
C. Memory Stuff
Windows 3.1 requires 2mb of memory. Its better off to have 4mb than
2MB. I have 8MB of memory. 1,024 KB equals 1 Megabyte.
D. The Write program.
Lots of people think the Write program is nothing better than the boring
MS-DOS Editor. But it is. People think you can't insert different types of
fonts but you can. Just click the Character Menu and it should say Fonts.
Click it, and you can change the fonts.
A. Opening a Write file on Microsoft Word 97.
In Word 97, click File, Open, 3in Floppy A: then type the filename and
below it should say doc. document with an arrow next to it. Click the arrow
and scroll down until it says Windows Write 3.0-.wri click it and then hit
Open.
B. Pasting a picture off the Internet into Word 97 and opening it up in
Write.
This is very tricky to do. First paste the picture to Word 97. Then click
File, Save As, 3in Floppy A: then type the filename.Next underneath it
should say Save As: Word Document .doc with an arrow next to it. Click on the arrow and scroll down to Windows Write 3.0 .wri. Click it then click Save. Then bring the disk to your Windows 3.1 PC and open Write. Then click
File,Open, A: and click the file.

Windows 3.1 Advanced Help
Microsoft Windows 3.1 Information
I'am a big fan of Windows 3.1. Even though it may be old and they
don't make any more software for it, I still like it. Windows 3.1 has a lot
of cool features to it. This site is a help site for people still using
Windows 3.1
A. Setup
Here are the requirments for Windows 3.1:
Processor: 386DX Recommened: 486
Memory: 2MB Recommended: 4MB
Video: EGA Moniter Recomeneded: VGA
Operating System: MS-DOS 5.0 or above
Mouse: Optional
One High Density Floppy Drive
CD-ROM: Optional
Sound Card: Optional
B. Desktop
Every Windows version has a shell or a program, desktop that rides on
MS-DOS. Windows 1.0 and 2.0 have an MS-DOS Shell. Windows 95/NT and 98 have
Explorer and Windows 3.0 and 3.1 have a Program Manager.
Program Manager is where all your applications, files, and programs are
stored. Program Manager has program groups. In each program group are
Program Icons. If you click on an icon, your program will start.
I don't like Program Manager for a couple of reasons:
1. The program group icons are all the same.
2. All the windows it causes to open.
3. Your can't save or restore your original Program Manager configuation.
I don't use Program Manager anymore. I can still access it but I
don't use it. Luckily, my computer is a Compaq Prolinea Desktop 575 and it
comes with a program called Tabworks. Tabworks is a shell that replaces
Progman Manager's groups and windows with tabs like that are found in a
notebook.
C. Desktop Tips and Tricks
Sometimes Windows loses icons. To get those icons back you have to
restore your original Program Manager. But now you don't have to. Just go to
the File Manager. Click the Windows directory and look for the file win.ini.
Click it. Then scroll down to where it says Wallpaper. Delete what it says
such as Winlogo.bmp and put in a new background. Then restart your computer.
Getting the shell or desktop in Windows 95
Go to a Windows 95 computer and copy the file Explorer.exe to a disk.
Then bring the disk back to your Windows 3.1 PC and copy Explorer.exe to
your Windows directory and then go to the file: Win.ini and go to where it
says shell and delete progman.exe and type explorer.exe then hit save and
restart your computer. Warning: You must have Windows 32-bit extensions and
you should make a boot disk just in case.
Explorer.exe doesn't work and now I'm at the DOS prompt.
If explorer.exe didn't work then type edit________windowswin.ini and change
explorer.exe back to progman.exe and click save. Now try typing win at the
prompt and hit enter.
